Virtual Reality (VR) has been something promised for decades and only within recent years has it come into existence. VR is a computer-generated 3-D simulation using electronic equipment to be interacted with by humans in a seemingly real or physical way. VR is well known in the gaming world, but there are many other interesting and exciting uses for VR within a number of fields; such as, medicine, business, architecture and manufacturing.

With the recent increase in VR applications comes a spike in a variety of required electronic components. A VR system is made up of 2 major subsystems: the hardware and the software. The hardware includes the computer or other I/O devices, while the software includes the database and application software.

The key electronic components that make up VR are sensors; such as magnetometers, accelerometers, and gyroscopes to measure motion and direction in space. Additionally, MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Sensors) play a significant role to build such VR devices on a tiny scale.

  • A magnetometer acts as a compass so the device can differentiate north vs. south.
  • Accelerometers are sensors that have the ability to tell the device which way is up and down.
  • Lastly, gyroscope sensors calculate orientation. All three of these sensors are required to provide a seemingly real 3-D experience.

With all this being said, VR is about to become mainstream and could surpass $40 billion USD market by 2020. The major growth drivers for the market includes growing digitization, advancement of technology, increasing demand for head mounted displays in gaming and entertainment industries, and rising investment in VR among other players. However, high costs of devices and lack of technical expertise are the factors hindering the growth of the market.
