Considering the role of FPGA in Digital security one evolving application is object detection and identification. This genre includes the difficult task of recognizing and identifying faces in images and videos.
FPGA are great for this kind of task. Intel's current generation of FPGA offer DSP slices with both fixed-point and floating-point capabilities, making them suitable for a wide range of artificial intelligence (AI) and embedded vision applications.
For example: Intel's Arria 10 FPGA provide up to 1.5 teraflops (TFLOPs) of single-precision floating-point processing performance, 1.15 million logic elements, and more than a terabit-per-second high-speed connectivity.
Working with Intel's Programmable Solutions Group, engineers at a Chinese multinational telecommunications equipment and systems company have used Arria 10 FPGA to implement a cloud inferencing application using a convolutional neural network algorithm to perform high-accuracy facial recognition on more than 1,000 images/frames per second.
Traditionally, facial recognition technology has been primarily of interest to law enforcement agencies, who use these systems to isolate and identify faces in crowds. But there is great potential for this technology in a wide variety of applications. Some will empower and improve our quality of life such as those enabling blind or visually impaired people to virtually identify if someone they know is approaching them. Other applications can be downright scary; imagine a store identifying you as you enter and immediately targeting you with redirect ads just as what happens now when an internet site recognizes your IP address and ads for things you recently searched begin to automagically appear in your surf. This technology could change everything from Amber alerts to airport checkins, door locks to store checkouts. Forget about Apple pay, try Facepay. FPGA are changing our world.
