The facial recognition feature will be an added security device. Hold the phone up to your face and the Samsung S8 will map your features and unlock the phone for you.
The details about the S8 have already been leaked, and the new phones features are already well-known. But Samsung will confirm the specs in a March 29th press conference, and the new phone will be available for purchase in mid-April.
There are rumors that facial recognition software will also be a feature in the next iPhone.
How does facial recognition work?
Facial recognition works by creating a 'map' of the individual's face. This map will identify landmarks, note any distinguishable features, and create a map of the individual's face. Facial recoginition software is already in use through certain security systems but has not been introduced to a phone until now.
The previous generation of facial recognition software relied on 2-dimensional mapping. A new and more accurate software now relies on 3-dimensional mapping. This will take into shape (literally) the shape of your nose, lips, and eye sockets.
FPGA are sometimes used in facial recognition software. The advantage of using an FPGA is that the chip can be programmed - and reprogrammed - for specialized end-uses. A video feed will act as an input, displaying the subject's face. The program will then process the image, match landmarks with whatever images are stored in the memory, and grant or deny access depending on if there's a match in the system or not.
Right now, phone security includes inputting a thumbprint - like in the iPhone- or typing in a passcode. Using facial recoginition will add another layer of security to the phone, preventing harmful access attempts.
