Xilinx Kintex-7 vs Comparable Altera FPGA

     When it comes to designing a FPGA board, engineers often face a decision between choosing Xilinx FPGA or Altera...

     Recently, Xilinx offered a comparison between their 7 series family and comparable Altera FPGA. The results from the analysis are as follows:

     Xilinx's newest mid-range series is the Kintex family. Xilinx has focused on the Kintex-7 325T family, and they use the Altera Stratix V series for comparison purposes.

     The first power benchmark looks at the wireless WCDMA/ LTE Picocell. The graphic compares similar FPGA from each brand. Compared to the Kintex-7 325T FPGA, Altera's Stratix V 5SGXA4I series uses 1.65 times the power.

     A similar benchmark comparison looking at the QAM Modulator shows that the Stratix V 5SGXEA43I uses 2.02 times more power than the 325T Kintex-7.

     When it comes to the third power benchmark, the AVB Switcher, the Altera's 5AGXB3I uses 1.37 times more power than Kintex-7 325T2LI.
